Soccer Gags Year End Function Report
On December 1st 2017 Soccer Gags members flew from various parts of the world and landed in the Mother City for the Year End Function. Upon landing members were transported to an exclusive place along the shores of Table Bay, a suburb named Bloubergstrand where they got checked into luxurious penthouses. “For the first time in my many years, I felt like a rich person” said Broke Fan who was overwhelmed by the classy accommodation.
Friday evenings are always tricky ones especially for those attending the event for the first time. The likes of Vusi Bryn, Mpho Kgasago, Godfrey Mputsanyane, and Nnana Joseph of Botswana were a bit quiet until music started playing, drinks started flowing and Steve Kubheka took over the dance floor. Boom! We all learned the Botswana moves. Lesotho was never going to disappoint as Shaz threw in some setolo-tolo moves. With Melf Kempton flame-grilling the meat and Tsheko Mashego operating the bubbles in the Jacuzzi there was no way the evening would be boring.
Saturday began with a fun run along the beach under the guidance of the 10 times Comrades Marathon finisher coach Maniki Moloi. The run was exciting with members singing whilst running which attracted other random runners to join in. After a buffet breakfast the tour of the Mother City began in private minibuses. First stop was at one of the World’s 7 Wonders Nature, the Table Mountain.
Table Mountain spoke life into those who were overpowered by Friday partying. It was at this mountain the likes of Ndivhuwo Ramutanda and Sidwell Feesh Francis felt like they are on top of the world. Feesh started to walk like he had Diplomatic Immunity in Cape Town. From Table Maountain we descended to Camps Bay for Beach Soccer Game. If Feesh thought Table Mountain was his best experience he was wrong, a surprise awaited him at the beach soccer field where he finally got to meet his childhood hero in the form of CAF Champion and Bafana-Bafana Legend Mark Fish.
Mark Fish inspired members to play a great game of beach soccer. As is the tradition at the Soccer Gags Year Function, The Yellow Team played against The Blue Team. Referee of the day Lerato Munchie blew the whistle to kick-start the game. It looked like it was going to be a long game for The Blues as Ndivhuwo kicked the air and landed on his back on his first attempt at the ball, you can’t finish the whole bottle of whiskey and expect to be sober.
The Blues scored 5 courtesy of an own goal by Godfrey, goal apiece from Fish, BrokeFan, Vusi, and a stunning goal by Steve. The Yellow Submarine scored 3 from the sexy legs of Mpho, the thin legs of Tsheko and a Mohawk header from Rubza Mohale. The goals could have been more but both goalkeepers Shaz and Nnana were on top of their games. With Shaz producing a save of the tournament when she stopped Tsheko on one on one. Nnana stopped several goals and was awarded man of the match or is it woman of the match?
From Soccer Match the tour proceeded towards Cape Point using the marvellous Chapmans Peak route and a stop at Hout Bay. Saturday evening saw members dressing up for the Awards Ceremony where Hayatou Fred Mooketsi assisted with handing over the awards to members who did exceptionally well throughout the year in growing the Soccer Gags brand.
Nnana Joseph was crowned Most Valuable Player (MVP) Female, Steve Kubheka carried the MVP Male award, Sidwell Francis Feesh walked away with the Most Controversial Member of the Year Award (2nd consecutive time), Lerato Munchie earned the Best Female Contributor of the Year (2nd consecutive time), and Melf Kempton lifted the Best Male Contributor of the Year. Congratulations to our Champions.
Following a breath-taking presentation Botswana won the right to host the 2018 event ahead of Northern Cape. We wish Botswana all the best of success in next year’s event. Fun was had as the pictures show and on Sunday we all left the Mother City in good spirit looking forward to an exciting 2018.
On behalf of all members of Soccer Gags, I would like to offer my sincere gratitude to all those who made this event a success and thank all members who showed up. My humble apology also goes to Mpho Kgasago whose flight couldn’t land in Johannesburg due to bad weather and had to land in Durban and Botswana at some stage (Yena Ayakwini…lol). I know the feeling but all that matters is you arrived home safe.
I wish you and your families a fantastic festive season and a prosperous New Year
