The AFCON 2021 has excitingly brought many surprises most notably the elimination of some of the powerhouses of African soccer, Ghana and Nigeria. Ghana entered the competition as one of the favourites to win Group C which comprised of Morocco a team which was expected to battle the group's top spot with, Gabon and Comoros (AFCON debutants).

Few if not none would have imagined that Ghana would leave the tournament in group stage with only 1 point having lost 1-0 to Morocco, drew 1-1 with Gabon, and lost their final life-line game 3-2 to Comoros who went on to qualify for next round (last 16) as one of the four best third placed teams in the tournament leaving Ghana languishing in the bottom of the group.

As if the Ghana debacle was not enough, Nigeria who had won all of its group games where it decisively beat Egypt (the record 7 times winners of the competition) 1-0, Sudan 3-1, and Guinea-Bissau 2-0 came out of Group D as winners of the group to face Tunisia who finished Group F on third position in the last 16. Tunisia dismissed Nigeria with only one goal of the game scored in the 47th minute of the game played on 23 Jan 2022 in Garoua City.

Failure by Nigeria to respond to Youssef Msakni's goal, meant the favourite giants had to pack their bags and follow Ghana out of the wonderful host country of Cameroon.
