In 1995 the league comprised of 18 teams, players played more league games and the national team selectors had a bigger pool of players to choose from. South Africa won the 1996 AFCON. When South Africa qualified for its first ever World Cup (1998) it was the same number of teams in the PSL,18.
The league still had 18 teams when South Africa qualified for the 2002 World Cup. South Africa’s performance dropped from the year the league was cut to16 teams in the 2002/2003 season. Information from that season onwards is public knowledge, the team became so weak it couldn’t even qualify for more World Cup tournaments other than the one it hosted in 2010.
It’s a fact that the more teams there are in the league, the more challenging it becomes. Players grow strength through tougher challenges. The time might be now for the PSL to consider increasing that number of participants. Our players need this, the nation needs a mentally stronger players.
