As we await final decision on First Division (Glad Africa) Champions, Soccer Gags takes a journey back to the 1994 NSL. The league would have seen Cape Town Spurs and Orlando Pirates equal on points (49) however Spurs had superior goal difference and would eventually be crowned champions.
There was a case involving Pirates and Vaal Professionals where Vaal failed to produce proof of identity for their players. A final decision was taken in the boardroom to award Pirates a point for that game and eventually Pirates won the log by a point (50) and qualified to represent South Africa in the 1995 CAF Champions League, a competition they went on to win.
Mind you, unlike the modern day CAF Champions League, the 1995 Edition was only played by teams that have won domestic leagues in their respective countries. This is not an attempt to raise a question on whether or not a backdoor was used to attain the 1995 star like that of Sundowns in 2016. The fact of the matter is that Rules are Rules. Both teams earned their stripes and we salute their efforts in conquering Africa.
