Vincent Aboubakar has equalled his childhood hero Patrick Mboma’s national team goal record of 33 goals. Aboubakar scored a brace for Cameroon in a thrilling comeback against Burkina Faso in a contest for 3rd place finish at AFCON 2021.
Vincent came in as a second half substitute in the 46th minute when Burkina Faso was leading by 2 goals to 0. Barely 2 minutes after coming in, Burkinabe increased their tally to 3 goals lead through the 22 year old Djibril Ouattara making it seem impossible for the host nation to come back.
However, the Indomitable Lions unlocked their quest to conquer the game through Stephane Bahoken who reduced the deficit to 3-1 in the 70th minute of the game. Aboubakar surfaced in the dying minutes to give Cameroon hope when he turned the score to 3-2 on 85th minute. He returned 2 minutes later at 87th minute to put Cameroon on level terms (3-3) and took the game to penalty shootouts.
Cameroon eventually won the game 5-3 on penalties after Ibrahim Touré failed to convert Burkinabe's 3rd penalty spot. Aboubakar and Mboma are now occupying 3rd spot on Cameroon ‘s all time Top Goalscorers List with 33 goals. Number 2 is the Legendary Roger Miller with 43 goals, and Cameroon's current FA President Summuel Eto’o is sitting on the top spot with 56 goals.
